Happy birthday, World Wide Web! Hard to believe you’re turning 20 already. It seems like just yesterday we were hearing the pitter patter of little dial-up, delighting at the words “you got mail,” and getting frustrated when calling our friends and receiving that dreaded busy signal. You’re all grown up now, helping people learn how to farm and become overnight pop sensations.
Remember the bad old days of blog networks. Like when I was at b5media championing the idea of content as the great savior of the Internet, the bellwether of future journalism, the dawn of an era of online advertising as the dominant (and only) truly valuable means of creating revenue online?
Yeah… so about that.
I was wrong.
I was wrong about the idea of wide adoption of online advertising as a primary revenue source for the long tail. I was wrong about content not being a commodity. I was wrong to think that successful online startups could have successful advertising models. I was just wrong.
Aaron Brazell,Technosailor, Product is King. Content is Not.
Brazell is a part of the WordPress core developer team and author of the WordPress Bible. His conclusion is that advertising like content is commoditized. The only viable business model, he suggests, is to create products.
The question then is what products can a news organization create that leverages its coverage?

Steve and Allen from lesseverthing.com posted a humorous infographic about how infographics are “ruining the Internet”. Obviously there is a lot of sarcasm and humor in their post but they have a point they were trying to make which is that publishers are getting lazy and are preferring infographics to text posts.
